Watermelon seeds contain 8 out of 9 essential amino acids required for the human body. The seeds can be dried, roasted or ground into flour and the roasted version is eaten as a snack in many cultures. They have a nutty flavour. Traditionally, watermelon seed oil is obtained by cold-pressing the seeds in wooden bowls. This oil is used in cosmetics since it is particularly helpful for oily skin conditions and it is a natural moisturiser as well.
The seeds are graded based on their colour and size. The common grades that are available for trade are:
- Sadir (8mm – 12mm, Brownish),
- Farash (8mm – 12mm, Creamy),
- Kashair (10mm – 14mm, White) and
- Jumbo (10mm -14mm, Whitish)
